The Cortland Community Foundation Granted $90,000 to Worthy Not-For-Profits (2010)
The Cortland Community Foundation granted $90,000 to worthy not-for-profit organizations in 2010. During the past 12 years the foundation has been serving the needs of Cortland County, granting $1.04 million to 65 local not-for-profit agencies. Our 2010 projects consist of the following:
- Cortland County Historical Society – Replaced the boiler that heats the research center. The malfunctioning boiler was leaking carbon monoxide into the building causing an evacuation and the temporary closing of the museum until a new boiler could be installed. Funding was also provided for the purchase and installation of an entrance door, installation of shelving in the basement storage area and to improve the ventilation of the basement.
- Lime Hollow Center for Environment & Culture – Provided funding for school field trips to the nature center. Due to increased cuts in school budgets, school funds for field trips are being eliminated.
- Madison/Cortland ARC – Supporter of the 2010 Camp ARCO in Cortland. Camp ARCO is a summer day camp for children with disabilities. Through a grant from the Cortland Community Foundation, children whose families would otherwise not be able to afford camp are able to attend.
- United Way for Cortland County – With nearly ¾ of the population of Cortland County receiving aid from one or more of the United Way’s 12 member agencies, supporting the organization is vital to our community.
- Homer History Center – After receiving a long-term lease from Key Bank in the Village of Homer to house and display artifacts depicting the history of Homer, the Homer History Center was given money needed to install handicapped-accessible restrooms in order to operate.
- Camp Owahta – Supporter of Camp Owahta’s Waterfront Revitalization Project.
- CNY SNAP – Granted funds to subsidize the cost of spaying and neutering pets for low-income families.
- Seven Valley Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse – The Foundation provided funds to enable the council to hold the first secure prescription medication collection event in Cortland County.
- Cortland Repertory Theatre – Sponsored the performance of the children’s show, “The Jungle Book”.
- Habitat for Humanity – Provided the foundation and framing materials for a “green” home constructed on 33 Arthur Avenue, Cortland.
- Youth Bureau – A grant was awarded for the purchase of materials to repair the roofs of 11 cabanas and the pump house located at Yaman Park. In addition, labor is being provided by Leadership Cortland.
- Lamont Memorial Free Library – Purchased a multi-functional copy machine. Lamont Memorial Free Library is located in McGraw.
- McGraw Historical Society – Purchased a fireproof filing cabinet designed to safely store historical pictures and documents.
- St. Paul Lutheran Church – Purchased equipment to start a community quilting class, where some of the quilts made will be donated to local nursing homes.
- TC3 Foundation – Funding from the Cortland Community Foundation will allow the TC3 Foundation to provide two $500.00 scholarships this Fall for members of the Cortland community showing a need for financial assistance. One scholarship will be awarded to a graduate of a Cortland County High School. The second scholarship will be awarded to a non-traditional student residing in Cortland County.
- YWCA – Supported the YWCA’s “ More Than You Can Imagine” capital campaign, to preserve and expand the YWCA’s facilities.
- Preble Children’s Center – Recent economic times are proving to be a challenge for daycare centers. Reduced grants at the state and federal levels have added to financial problems.
